Create a Card for Hope Kit

DESCRIPTION
Spread smiles by sharing your art or a few words of encouragement. Small cards made of a half-sheet of folded construction paper are inserted in our Hope Kits. Each card features a drawing or a quick positive message. Create hope by creating cards for kits!
ITEMS NEEDED
1. Construction paper or similarly colored paper / card stock
2. Markers or crayons
NEXT STEPS
Make as many cards as you can according to the instructions. When finished, mail your cards to Hope and Comfort, 659 Highland Ave (rear lower level), Needham, MA 02494. For questions, contact:

Elkins PTO Beautification

Elkins PTO is looking for your help this month in the courtyard! 
  • Assist Elkins PTO Beautification Team with hands-on gardening and maintenance tasks such as, pulling weeds, trimming shrubs, bed maintenance, watering plants, and planting seeds.
  • When: April 26, 27, 28, from 3-5pm
  • Where: Elkins HS Courtyard, located in the center of the school. Wait for PTO member in Courtyard. A PTO representative will arrive at 3:05PM after school buses depart.
  • The PTO will provide water, gloves and gardening tools. You must wear a mask and practice social distancing!
    • Bring your YES hour sheet for the PTO representative to sign at the end of your shift.

Elkins DoSomething Recycling Drive

At the Riverstone Pavilion on Saturday, April 24 from 10am - 1pm, Elkins DoSomething will be accepting donations for its Recycling Drive.
  • Bring your YES hour form for the DoSomething Officers to sign.
  • You must sign up for a time slot through this Signupgenius. Please comment "Engineering Academy" when you sign up. Only sign up for one slot, even if you are bringing items to earn more than one hour.

Item and Hour Guidelines:
  • Items Allowed:
    • Cardboard – please ensure boxes are clean of any food; AND empty of all packing materials IE  Styrofoam, plastic air bags, plastic wrap, Kraft paper. 5 cardboard of any type for 1 hour
    • Cartons – both aseptic and table top such as juice cartons, soup cartons, milk cartons. 3 cartons of any type for 1 hour
    • Metal Cans – metal cans, aluminum cans and bottles, soup cans, veggie cans, fruit cans, pet food cans. 5 metal cans for 1 hour
    • Glass – bottles and jars, clear, green and brown. Please ensure bottles and jars are empty, and lids have been removed. 3 glass bottles for 1 hour
    • Plastic – bottles or containers that are emptied and rinsed. Examples include soda bottles, milk jugs, detergent bottles, yogurt cups, and margarine tubs. 10 plastic of any type for 1 hour
    • Flexible Plastic - grocery bags and newspaper sleeves only. 10 flexible plastics for 1 hour
    • Paper - 1 pound of any type of paper = 1 hour.
    • Please ensure all items that are donated are empty, clean and do not contain any food on them!
  • Items NOT Allowed:
    • CD’s or CD cases, Bubble Wrap (hard plastic packaging), Flower pots, Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Chemicals, Oil Based Paint, Plastic Soda Rings/Wrappers, Plastic Coat Hangers, Plastic furniture, Pizza Boxes, Toys, Trash/Garbage, Tree Waste, Videotapes

Happy Earth Clothing Drive

At the front of Elkins High School on March 13th from 1-5pm, Happy Earth will be holding a clothing drive for FBISD Shared Dreams.
  • For every 5 articles of clothing donated, 1 hour will be given, with a cap of 3 hours per student. Clothing items may be new or used.
  • Donations over 15 clothing items are still welcome and encouraged.
  • Masks are required when dropping off clothes.
  • You must bring your YES form to sign at the drop-off.

Another Night Out - Homelessness Awareness Event

** Update: Due to the inclement weather, Another Night Out has been postponed indefinitely. As of now, there are no updates as to when it will take place in the future, and the registration site has been closed. Thank you all for your support and patience! **

Parks Youth Ranch is hosting its annual homelessness awareness event, Another Night Out, on February 26th, for juniors and seniors. Attendees will be able to experience some of the hardships faced by homeless youths in our community and by doing so, will be able to directly support Parks Youth Ranch's endeavours to provide life changing service to youths in their care. This year, the event will be virtual, and participants can earn up to 6 volunteer hours. Sign up here or with the flyer below.

Students, your YES hours have been updated in Schoology. Please check your YES hours.
  • (Note: Your count of YES hours will be listed as the grade for the "Total Community Service Hours" assignment in your Engineering Academy Schoology course.)
  • Seniors, make sure you are on track to have for 81 hours by the end of April.
  • There are virtual volunteer opportunities in my (Mr. Lam's) weekly newsletter.

Earn 3 volunteer hours for creating a 30 second to a minute video a promoting the academy that includes:
  • Favorite thing about the academy
  • What you have gotten out of the academy
  • Events, enrichments, and/or volunteer opportunities that they have enjoyed or that have “spoken” to them
  • Why you would recommend joining the academy

    - For SOPHOMORES: you will only need to complete 93.5 YES hours by the end of your 4 years in high school to receive your YES medal for graduation.

    REQUIREMENTS​

    Academy students must complete a minimum of 12.5 hours of community service per semester for a total of 25 hours per school year.
    This year 2021-22 # of hours you should have at beginning of year:
    9th grade – 18.5 hours
    10th grade – 31 hours
    11th grade – 56 hours
